The 10 Biggest Mistakes People Make That Cause Them to Lose Personal Power
It's no secret that a lot of people are trying to gain a greater sense of power in their professional and personal lives. Just look at the flood of books, seminars, and workshops that are available on the subject!
The mystery for many people seems to be where to find real answers that can help them get real results. I have met hundreds of people who were looking for something to help them make more money, lose weight, or feel more fulfilled. The common complaint seems to be, "I'm not sure what it is, but something is definitely off." The challenge is how do we fix our problems if we don't know what our problems are?
To help you get to the root of the problem, here is a list of the ten biggest mistakes that cause us to lose personal power:
1. Poor Time Management
How do you use your time? Do you consistently use it to produce predictable results? What is your relationship to time?
2. Not Consistently Walking Your Talk
Do you consistently act in a manner that is in perfect harmony with what you say? (It IS absolutely possible to become flawless at this.)
3. Bending or Folding
This involves making allowances, excuses and exceptions that are out of alignment with your truth. Of course, there are valid exceptions. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to distinguish valid exceptions from invalid exceptions. If you make too many exceptions, it can erode your personal strength and trust.
4. Not Keeping Your Standards HIGH
Know when and how to raise the bar.
5. Not Keeping All of You in One Place
Did you know you can be in more than one place (mentally, emotionally, and energetically) at a time? Learning to keep all of you together will give you enormous power and focus.
6. Not Learning to Exercise Your Three Choices
In the face of conflict your three choices can restore the power that anger, frustration, and non-acceptance take from you. For more information see our
February 2006 featured article.
7. Not Following Your Inner Truth
If your response is, "Huh? What's that?", then you are most likely not "connected" to your inner self. If you are not connected, it is too easy to ignore your inner guidance and override "that little voice inside" with your head. Perhaps you brush it off as "passing thoughts"? This is a huge mistake if you want to increase your personal power!
8. Not Learning How to Get Back on Track with You
There is an easy game I play with my clients that can instantly get you back on track. It's called "make a promise and keep it". It doesn't matter whether the promise is big or small. If you make promises to yourself and are consistent in keeping them, you will stay on track.
9. Not Learning How to Continually Ask the Three Questions
- What is the message for me?
- What is the affirmation of what I've already accomplished?
- What's missing that needs to get handled NOW?
If you continually ask these three questions, when new people or information come into your world, you will always get instant clarity about why it is there for YOU.
10. Not Being Curious, Open, and Ready to Take Specific Actions
Be curious about what there is to learn, apply, and integrate into your life. Be open to seeing things differently. Be prepared to take action to break cycles and patterns. Be comfortable in your own skin instead of looking for outside things to comfort you.
Once you begin to see clearly where you are off, take action quickly...
...before the door closes and you get amnesia. Here are several actions you can take to overcome any of the ten mistakes:
- Write down anything that is not working for you and really look at it.
- Admit that you may be "off" and leaking power.
- Talk to someone you trust and respect. They may be able to help you uncover viewpoints and options that are not be obvious to you.
- If you conclude that you have indeed identified a power leak, dive in and fix it!
- If you conclude you have not uncovered the power leak, keep looking. The sooner you can take action to fix these leaks, the faster you will enjoy the benefits of increased power.
- It is always easier to fix power leaks if you have a partner helping you who has already broken the patterns you want to break. Why go through it alone? Learn to lean on others and fix power leaks through teamwork!
